Description: Many people do not synthesise enough vitamin D from sunlight and have low or suboptimal vitamin D levels, especially during winter and spring. There are many factors that contribute to this problem, e.g. living and working mainly indoors, skin pigmentation, elderly skin, living at higher latitudes, skincovering clothing or air pollution. Only a small number of food items are sources of vitamin D, so often supplements are recommended to compensate for an inadequate vitamin D status. Opinions on what are adequate vitamin D serum values differ. However, many experts agree that, in order to benefit from the recently discovered health benefits of vitamin D, serum values of at least 80 nmol/l are necessary. High doses of vitamin D are often required in order to achieve these serum values. Vitamin D3 is 3-10 times more effective than vitamin D2 in the human body and although vitamin D2 is still often used, many experts do not consider vitamin D2 to be equivalent to vitamin D3 anymore.
