Review: Even though it is mostly very convenient, I loathe cling film. It is often very fiddly to use, is not always effective and is very dubious environmentally . . . And then there are the possible health risks. So I have been looking for alternatives and at last I have found a product that seems to perform the same functions without any of the drawbacks - Vegan Food Wraps. These are brightly coloured cotton squares soaked in a wax solution that you can wrap directly round food to keep it fresh or use it to seal open bowls of food. It clings as tightly as cling film, doesn’t unravel (as cling film often does) and is reusable. It also looks bright and pretty. It is easy to clean - wash in luke warm water and hang out to dry. It retains all its properties intact but not the smell of previous foods. Are there any drawbacks? Just the one - the price. At first sight they seem to be an expensive alternative to cling film, but they are reusable and last for up to a year which offsets the initial outlay considerably, but the price is not exorbitant when one considers the advantages of the product. I believe it is worth spending a little more if it means we can reduce the use of plastics - and these also have the bonus of being vegan - no bees exploited in their manufacture! I have one suggestion to make. It would be very useful if it were available by the metre so you could cut it to any size or shape you require. It is an excellent product made, not by a huge multinational conglomerate, but by a small firm in the Cotswolds.
