Description: Valerian oil is extremely relaxing and soothing. It is particularly good for insomnia and nervous disorders. A relaxing herbal tea is also made from its roots. Traditionally it is used as a herbal tincture or tablet as a sedative. Valerian has a pungent aroma, which can be lifted by blending with Roman or Moroccan Chamomile, Patchouli, Lavender, Cedarwood, Sweet Orange or Mandarin. To encourage a restful night's sleep, try 1 drop of Valerian, 2 drops of Roman Chamomile and 1 drop of Lavender blended with 10ml of Coconut oil. Massage this gently all over the body, then lie back in a warm bath to allow the blend to soak into the skin. Alternatively, the same quantities of essential oils could be added to a burner or diffuser placed in the bedroom half an hour before bedtime. Main Theraputic Properties: Antispasmodic, Sedative, Bactericidal, Calmative. Contraindications: Possibly sensitising. Review: Valerian smells horrific, so you won't want to diffuse this by itself. But its pungent odor is easily masked with lavender, which is another oil good for relaxing and sleep. (If you hate lavender, try orange.) Melatonin doesn't seem to affect me at all, while just one third of a "good" sleeping pill gives me a major hangover the next day. So I was looking for something that would help with sleep without making me feel like garbage the next day. A few drops of this Valerian in my all-night diffuser masked by lavendar did make a noticeable difference to my ability to sleep. I was aware that I felt a lot groggier in the night--not a feeling you want in the day, but helpful when you're trying to go to sleep. I battle on and off with insomnia and wake up a lot in the night, so it was nice to find something that helps make falling asleep easier. But I also suspect that I might be experiencing a bit of a hangover from it the next day (nothing as bad as the mainstream pills), so it's not something I want to use regularly. If you're a big fan of sleeping aids, you'll probably want to check this out. My husband is very sensitive to meds and has several kinds of sleeping aids that he rotates through to try to avoid building up tolerance. If you're like him, you'll probably love this product. Just have another oil on hand to mask that intense odor and you'll be all set.

Review: when you first open the container you smell the alcohol, when you burn the oil you smell the valerian but you have to wonder how close to valerian the smell is. I tried Baldwin's valerian oil, a lot more expensive at £16 for 5ml but you immediately smell and recognise the valerian root when you open the container, I am not associated to Baldwin's in any way, just comparing products. Sometimes you don't know how bad something is unless you have tried the best.
